By the end of the year the construction of the National Storage for Radioactive Waste should be completed, Sergey Tsochev – Chairman of the Board of Directors of the State Enterprise “Radioactive Waste” said on BNR.

The funds needed for the construction of the repository are around 72 million euros and have been provided by the Kozloduy International Fund and the European Commission.

After the completion of the construction works the storage must receive a license for its work and be put into operation 2024.

The national storage is intended to accept the waste that has accumulated from the operation of units one to four, the waste that will be obtained from the decommissioning activities, the waste from the operation of units five and six and possibly the waste from a new nuclear power plant.

According to him to cover the entire spectrum of waste both the second and third stages of the repository will have to be built.

The project is there, the site is there, the EIA has been done, we just need to start the construction of the next stages at an appropriate time… Let’s say that 2030 is a good deadline for starting the construction of the second stage
