Bulgaria government has stopped the construction of the Belene NPP

The Bulgarian Council of Ministers has adopted a decision to annul a government decision from 2018 concerning the future Belene nuclear power plant (NPP), as reported by BNT, citing the government press service.

Back on June 29, 2018, the Council of Ministers passed Decision No. 447, which designated the “Nuclear plant at the Belene site” as a site of national importance and set forth plans for the construction of a nuclear plant at the “Belene” location. This decision also involved negotiations with potential investors and equipment manufacturers.

With the latest government decision, the Minister of Energy has been tasked with taking the necessary steps to terminate the procedure announced by NEK EAD for the selection of strategic investors for the construction of the Belene NPP. The preferred candidates who had signed a confidentiality agreement are to be informed about submitting binding offers, as specified by the Ministry of Culture’s press service.
