The largest solar power plant in Bulgaria Verila123 MW was opened

The largest solar power plant in Bulgaria, SPP Verila, with a capacity of 123 megawatts, was officially opened today. Electrohold Trade, one of Bulgaria’s largest licensed electricity traders and part of the Eurohold group, has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with telecom company Yettel and telecommunications equipment provider CETIN. This landmark corporate contract represents the largest of its kind in Bulgaria and will supply approximately 80 percent and 86 percent of Yettel’s and CETIN’s total energy consumption, respectively, according to an announcement by the company’s press center.

During the opening ceremony, representatives of the plant emphasized that Verila SPP is occupying an area of 13,000 acres and featuring over 220,000 solar panels. On days with sunshine the plant has the capacity to power areas such as Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad.

The investment in SPP Verila amounted to slightly over BGN 200 million and was financed through a combination of the company’s own funds and financing from DSK Bank and Varengold Bank. The project company, Belozem Solar Park, which owns a majority stake in Eurohold, acted as the investor. The construction was carried out by SUNOTEC, a leading Bulgarian-German company specializing in photovoltaic plant construction.

With over 220,000 solar panels and more than 4,240 tons of steel structure, the installed capacity of the photovoltaic park represents approximately 7 percent of the country’s total capacity in this segment. Currently, Bulgaria has around 1700-1800 megawatts of installed photovoltaic power.
