The Bulgaria-Serbia gas connection will be launched on schedule in October

According to the schedule, the opening of the Bulgaria-Serbia gas connection will be in October. This was said by the Acting Minister of Energy, Rosen Hristov, during the inspection of the progress of the activities for the construction of the intersystem gas connection in the area of the village of Dobroslavtsi.

We are absolutely sure that the project will be completed on time by the Bulgarian side, as well as within the budget. All structures work closely and we exchange information on a regular basis, so we not only control, but also support the process.

Rosen Hristov, Bulgaria Minister of Energy

The minister pointed out that 1.8 billion cubic meters per year is the capacity of the gas connection.  Hristov informed that a large-scale analysis of the gas market in South-Eastern and Central Europe is currently being carried out with eight European countries in order for the other countries to diversify their gas supplies as Bulgaria has done. Therefore, our country is ready to build an additional compressor station on the interconnector to increase its capacity to 3.2 billion cubic meters.

The gas connection will be of reverse flow – Bulgaria can also buy gas from Serbia. However, the minister specified that the interconnector is mainly planned to be used in the Bulgaria-Serbia direction, since the Serbian side still depends on Russian gas and they have reserved the capacity of the terminal in Alexandroupolis which Bulgaria is building.

The start of the construction of the interconnector was given on February 1 in the presence of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev and the Head of State of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic.

BTA specifies that the pipe will be almost 170 kilometers long, 62 km of which are on the territory of Bulgaria. The interconnector starts from Novi Iskar and will be connected to the Serbian gas pipeline network near the city of Nis.
