Bulgaria and Ukraine signed energy cooperation memorandum

During Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenskyy’s visit to Sofia on Thursday, Bulgaria and Ukraine signed a significant memorandum of cooperation in the energy sector. Following the signing ceremony, Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov revealed that discussions have commenced to assess the feasibility of utilizing Russian-made reactors from Bulgaria’s Belene nuclear power plant in one of Ukraine’s nuclear power facilities. This development was captured in a video released by the public broadcaster BNT.

In parallel to these efforts, the European Commission announced that Ukraine could potentially utilize European Union funds to procure the nuclear reactors from Bulgaria. In a press conference, a spokesperson for the Commission affirmed that there are no obstacles to such an arrangement. The spokesperson emphasized that this matter falls within the purview of bilateral discussions between Bulgaria and Ukraine. Furthermore, they underscored that employing European funds for this purpose would not only facilitate the strengthening of the Ukrainian economy but also contribute to the overall cooperation between the two nations.
